I chose a major that requires a lot of online work. I usually take anywhere from two to four online classes each semester, which can be really tough. Here are my tips to help you survive your online courses:
Memorize the Syllabus
When you get the syllabus make sure you always have it within reach; either save it to a folder on your computer or print it out. Each class will have different standards on late assignments so make sure you know the variations of each classes rules.
Keep Track of Due Dates
This is so crucial for online classes. In regular courses you will typically be reminded of upcoming assignments in class, but online it is all up to you to keep track. One thing I do at the beginning of each semester is sit down with my agenda and write down all the due dates for all of my courses. It might take a while but you will be so happy you did it in the long run.
Email your Professor
Since there will be no face-to-face meetings, email your professor with any questions you have about the course at the beginning of the semester. Even if you don’t have any questions, make up something relevant to ask them. This will make them more likely to help you out in the future since you made an effort and reached out.
Know your Professor’s Expectations
The syllabus will give you a pretty good idea of what your professor is like. If it seems harsh and strict, you should get prepared for high expectations being placed on you.
Before doing any assignments, read the syllabus for the guidelines and requirements for that particular piece of work. A lot of classes will have you post on discussion boards so that the rest of the class can read your work; make sure it is done correctly to not only get a good grade but also to avoid your peers seeing your poorly done assignment.
One of the major perks about online classes is that they will typically allow you to work ahead. This can be such a life saver if you make the effort to stay on track. I recommend trying to stay at least one week ahead, if not more. This way, if you somehow goof up and miss an assignment you will still have time to finish it for full points.
I once took a one credit course that was only a quarter long and managed to finish it within the first month of it starting. It was great to have finished that course and be able to focus on my more important classes.
Since the only opinions your professor will get from you is in writing, make sure to put in the extra effort to make each assignment as well done as possible. Professors will notice you put in the extra work which may make them more likely to raise your grade if needed at the end of the semester.
Once I learned how to make the most of online classes I actually began to like them. As long as you follow these tips, you might begin to like them too!
